Breaking the mold
It’s fair to say that games provider Nolimit City is a regular member of VegasSlotsOnline News’ Slots of the Week. The supplier has featured more than 20 times since the slots roundup began and has made the cut once more with its most recent release The Rave, a highly volatile, five-reel slot based around the theme of a wild night out.
In light of the company’s success to date, VSO News recently sat down with Malcolm Mizzi, Nolimit’s chief commercial officer and managing director, to get some insight into the supplier’s process. He explained how the supplier comes up with its wild ideas and gave some indication of what fans can expect from upcoming releases.
For our readers that aren’t too familiar with the company, can you provide a bit of background on Nolimit City?
Nolimit City is a relatively new company. Our first game was released in 2015 and we’ve been growing at quite a rapid pace ever since. We’re pretty well-known these days, foremost for our provocative themes, volatile titles, and our xMechanics. We now have four offices around the world, in Sweden, Malta, India, and most recently Romania.
you need to roll up your sleeves and dig in
We’re not a huge studio, with just over 80 employees and quite a flat hierarchy. This usually means that you need to roll up your sleeves and dig in wherever it’s needed. Incredibly fun, but also very challenging – keeping things fresh. We do everything in-house and most of us have been with Nolimit for years and years.
How does Nolimit set itself apart in such a competitive industry?
It’s our dedication to creating slots with a quality-over-quantity approach when it comes to the artistic style, soundtrack, and gameplay mechanics. We really pour our heart and soul into these ‘secondary’ aspects, which other providers might overlook or simply rush to get out of the way. These things add up, and when done well can really elevate the entire gaming experience for the players.
You mentioned your provocative themes – what is the ideation process like for new slots?
We’re constantly chasing the new and unique. We never want to go stale and release the same game 100 times. To be fair, not all of our games introduce revolutionary mechanics or flip the whole slots world upside-down, however, we make sure that they do all stick out in some way. We simply don’t operate like most other game studios!
One of your most recent releases, Folsom Prison, was also featured in our Slots of the Week roundup. Can you explain a bit about what makes the game so popular?
I’d say that Folsom Prison is a good summary of why people love Nolimit City slots. It isn’t your everyday fruit/fish slot. It has a darker theme, which includes inmates sizzling up in the electric chair in one of the most infamously brutal prisons in the US.
a total simulated max win of 75,000x the base bet
Theme aside, it has crazy mechanics such as the cockroach multiplier +3 of our trademarked xMechanics, and an insane level of volatility – and let’s not forget the incredible soundtrack. The game has a total simulated max win of 75,000x the base bet. The combination of those three things just oozes excitement and keeps people coming back.
It seems that you enjoy a prison theme having already released Remember Gulag and San Quentin xWays. Does the success of previous releases inspire new ones?
You never know when inspiration will strike, but when it strikes, it strikes hard! For example, It was actually a toilet in a sh*tty pub in London during a company trip that started the entire concept for Punk Rocker, which led to the informal follow-up, Punk Toilet. We snapped a shot and three years later we have the best toilet-inspired game out there!
Once we saw the massive success with San Quentin, and how many people loved the gruesome prison theme, we knew we had to experiment with similar, yet different games.
We’re well aware of sequel syndrome. We tend to not do normal sequels, but we do sometimes reuse assets or characters from previous games when we make new titles. The player can see the progressions and are still familiar, but there are no ties in terms of the games being a conventional follow-up.
creates a kind of lore behind the games
For example, in our newest release The Rave, we can see DJ ₱5Ɏ₵ⱧØ ₥₳₦ⱧɄ₦₮, aka Joe Labrador from SQ, taking to the DJ stand and really getting the party started. It adds depth to our characters and creates a kind of lore behind the games. The possibilities are endless!
Do you have any other favorite Nolimit City games?
I think all the games at Nolimit City are awesome in their own way, however, I do have a personal soft spot for Book of Shadows. It’s built around a very classic and popular concept yet we turned it completely around to make it totally ours, unlike anything out there.
What’s next for Nolimit City? Do you have any upcoming slots you can share with us?
2021 was great, and 2022 seems to be another fantastic year for us as well. We have plenty of daring games in the pipeline, and we can’t wait to see how the players will react. We don’t want to give too much away, however, players can expect grueling crimes, a secret double life, and one hell of a traffic jam… We’re excited – we’re only getting bigger and better from here on out!
